We are in the midst of periya jEyar utsavam -aippasi mUlam.
mAmunikaL’s greatness can be observed from His prabhandham-s and his commentaries. His prabhandhams are lucid yet thought provoking. A few samples.
“mARan paNitha thamizh maRaikku mangaiyar kOne,ARangam kURa avadharitha..”
‘மாறன் பணித்த தமிழ் மறைக்கு மங்கையர்கோன் ஆறங்கம் கூற அவதரித்த ‘
upadhEsa rathinamAlai 9;
this pAsuram mentions that kaliyan’s prabhandham-s are explanatory works of swAmi nam-AzhwAr’s creations.
How?
AchArya Hrdhayam sUthram clearly highlights this aspect:
“vEdha chadhustangOpAyangaL padhinAlum pOlEa, innAlum irundhamizh nUl paNuval ARum..” 43
“வேத சதுசஷட்ங்கோபாயங்கள் பதினாலும் போலே , இந்நூலும் இருந்தமிழ் நூல் பனுவல் ஆறும்’
That is , the four prabhandham-s of satakOpan namely thiruvirutham, thiruvAsiriyam, periya thiruvandhAdhi and thiruvoizmohzi are likened to the four vEdham-s.
The vEdhams have six aspects-angangaL-shEkshA, vyAkaraNam, niruktham, chandhas, kalpam and jyOthisham.
Similarly, AzhwAr’s prabhandham have six parts which go on to explain or elaborate on the subjects addressed by mARAn. These are periya thirumozhi, thirukkuRunthANdakam, thirunedunthAndakam, thiru ezhu kURRirukkai, siRiya
thirumadal and periya thirumadal of thirumangai AzhwAr.
There can be no second opinion with regard to kaliyan following the concepts and footsteps of swAmi nam-AzhwAr.
This aspect thus is precisely highlighted as
“mARAn paNitha thamizh maRaikku mangaiyar kOne, dARAngam kURa avadharitha ..”
